With riverside walks, countryside paths and cycle routes almost on the doorstep, Eagle Mill is perfectly placed for exploring this beautiful corner of Cambridgeshire. Wander through Houghton and the Hemingfords, follow the River Great Ouse towards St Ives, or take the short walk to historic Houghton Mill. You will find Cambridge a most wonderful city with everything from punting to retail therapy on offer. If you haven’t been; it is worth a visit.

Cambridgeshire has far more wild countryside than people sometimes expect — from riverside meadows and woodland to fenland, wetlands and reservoirs.
There are also some lovely walks directly from Eagle Mill. One of our favourite circular routes takes you through Houghton, the Hemingfords and St Ives, combining countryside, riverside stretches and some of the prettiest places nearby.

Houghton & the Hemingfords
Houghton is just half a mile from Eagle Mill and one of the loveliest places to explore locally. At the heart of the village is Houghton Mill, a historic watermill with roots stretching back to the Domesday Book and now cared for by the National Trust.
From the mill, riverside paths lead out towards the Hemingfords and St Ives, making this a particularly good area to explore on foot. You can stop for a drink or something to eat in the village, take to the river with Houghton Boats, or wander through nearby meadows and quiet countryside.
St Ives, Cambridgeshire
St Ives is only a short journey from Eagle Mill and is well worth spending a few hours exploring. The town sits on the River Great Ouse and is best known for its historic medieval bridge and chapel, riverside walks and attractive town centre.
There is plenty to discover beyond the river too, from the Norris Museum and regular town markets to The Courtyard, where a collection of independent businesses are tucked away just off the main streets.
It is an easy place to wander without much of a plan — stop for coffee, browse the shops, follow the river or simply take your time exploring one of Cambridgeshire’s most characterful market towns.
Huntingdon
Huntingdon is only a short drive from Eagle Mill and offers a good mix of local history, green space and family-friendly places to visit. The town is closely associated with Oliver Cromwell, and the Cromwell Museum gives a fascinating look at his life and the part Huntingdon played in his story.
There is plenty beyond the town centre too. Hinchingbrooke Country Park offers lakes, woodland and open space for walking and relaxing, while Johnsons of Old Hurst makes for a very different day out with its unusual mix of animals and farm shop. Huntingdon Racecourse is another local favourite, with racing fixtures and events taking place through much of the year.
Cambridge
Cambridge makes an easy day out from Eagle Mill, but there’s no need to spend the whole day ticking off colleges and landmarks.
Take a private punt along the River Cam, wander through the Botanic Garden, try something completely different at the Cambridge Gin Laboratory or head just outside the city for afternoon tea with Highland cows.
Whether you want something romantic, relaxed or simply a little unusual, there are plenty of ways to make a day in and around Cambridge your own.
Something a little different
Not every day out has to mean another historic house, museum or countryside walk.
There are some much more active and unexpected things to do close to Eagle Mill too, whether you fancy trying padel, taking on an adventure golf course, heading into the woods for live-action gaming or spending a day on the water at Grafham.
