A walk in nature
Take in the wondrous countryside and river walks of the Ouse valley. Here we’ll be posting many more walking guides for you to enjoy.
Scenic circular route
- From Eagle Mill via Houghton, the Hemingfords and St Ives
- 6.8 miles
- 2-4 hours
Houghton
- Houghton Huntingdon PE28 2BD
The village of Houghton is quite a wonderful location and is right on our doorstep. (Half mile) Houghton Mill is an ancient water mill which received a mention in the Domesday Book. It is now upkept by the NT and there is a little tea room adjacent. From there you can launch on walks along the river. (You can take a little detour on the way down to the village and reward yourself with a cuppa.) If you are keen walkers, we can offer you good directions for a 7mile circular route which includes Houghton, the Hemingfords (Abbots and Grey), and St Ives.
Anglesey Abbey and Gardens
- Anglesey Abbey Quay Road, Lode CB25 9EJ
Within half an hour is Anglesey Abbey and Gardens. This is again National Trust maintained and the gardens are spectacular. The walk right around only takes an ambling hour.
Wimpole Estate
- Wimpole Estate, Arrington, Royston SG8 0BW
Also within half an hour’s drive is Wimpole Estate which has gardens by Capability Brown, walks and a working farm.
St Ives
- St Ives, Cambridgeshire
St Ives market town is 2 miles away. It is a pretty town with a big Oliver Cromwell history. The bridge is one of 3 in the UK with a Chapel situated on it. The town has a few independent shops and a few lovely tea rooms from which you can grab a takeaway.
Johnson's of Old Hurst
- Church St, Huntingdon PE28 3AF
A less obvious morning or afternoon out may be a trip to our local farm shop which is approximately 4 miles from Eagle Mill.
It was a farm shop but is so much more now! Alligators, crocodiles, snakes, ostriches, and wallabies to name but a few. It also has a tearoom which serves excellent snacks and indeed brunches and Steakhouse for your evening meal. An amble past the animals will take you to an enchanting woodland walk. We know the family owners and recommend it as an alternative to the norm. It is a great example of sustainability in action.
Cambridge
- Cambridge, Cambridgeshire
From St Ives you can take the guided busway to Cambridge from the park and ride. This busway leaves the traffic behind and has you in Cambridge within half an hour. We use it regularly as it is fuss free. You will find Cambridge a most wonderful city with everything from punting to retail therapy on offer. If you haven’t been; it is worth a visit.
