Places to visit during your stay at Eagle Mill

Eagle Mill is surrounded by local attractions that are worth visiting during your stay with us. Whether you enjoy countryside walks, history, good food, beautiful gardens, or shopping – there’s something for everyone within walking distance or a short car/bus ride away.

The town of St Ives

The quaint riverside town of St Ives, with a big Oliver Cromwell history, is 2 miles from Eagle Mill and is home to one of three bridges in the UK that has a chapel on it. We highly recommend you pop into the following during your visit:

The River Terrace – a fantastic cafe offering great coffee and delicious food from a Tudor-era building on the river

Tom’s Cakes – the best handmade cakes you’ll find for miles

Janet Church Interiors – perfect for gifts

Vadi Kitchen – a popular dinner spot if you love Turkish cuisine

Norris Museum – tells the stories of Huntingdonshire from 160 million years ago to the present day. Great for adults and kids.

The Oliver Cromwell – a quaint pub with a great ale selection and good pub grub

The city of Cambridge

Explore ancient colleges, cobbled streets and the serene “Backs” alongside the River Cam. Cambridge is packed full of history, as well as some of the country’s best independent restaurants, bars and retailers.

Kings College Chapel – be enchanted by the sublime Choir of King’s College. The Choral Evesong is sung here most days during term-time.

Cambridge College Tours – join expert-led walking or punting tours and soak up the city’s rich history and architecture.

The Fitzwilliam Museum – the arts and antiques museum of the University of Cambridge. The exhibitions are great for adults and kids.

Vanderlyle – one of Cambridge’s gems! A trendy restaurant with farm-to-table dishes focused on vegetables, plus seasonal tasting menus. You’ll need to book well in advance.

Fitzbillies – enjoy traditional Afternoon Tea in one of their three Cambridge cafes or bring back a delicious sweet treat to enjoy in the Eagle Mill garden.

The village of Houghton

Houghton is a picturesque village on Eagle Mill’s doorstep. This popular visitor destination has various attractions that are well worth visiting and if you’re a keen walker, then the 7 mile circular route through the countryside and surrounding villages is recommended.

Houghton village is full of personality and charm, with chocolate box cottages giving a feeling of Quintessential Britain, and two lovely pubs that are perfect for a drink or a bite to eat. The Houghton and Wyton Community Shop is owned and managed by the local community and has been a thriving village store since 1847.

Houghton Mill is an 18th Century water mill which received a mention in the Domesday Book.  It is now upkept by the National Trust and there is a little tea room adjacent.  From there you can launch on walks along the river.  (You can take a little detour on the way down to the village and reward yourself with a cuppa.)

The Manor, Hemingford Grey

The Manor is the home of the Green Knowe stories and Lucy Boston’s exquisite patchwork collection. The house and stunning gardens are well worth a visit and you can even book to have Afternoon Tea in the gardens.

The Cock in Hemingford Grey is an award-winning pub and The Grey House serves lovely coffee and delicious cakes. Whilst at The Grey House, it’s also worth popping into Dinky Deli and other boutique shops.

Wimpole Hall

Take a trip to another of the National Trust’s estates, Wimpole Hall.  A living working estate, guided by the seasons with an impressive mansion, parkland, gardens and rare breed farm.

Johnson’s of Oldhurst

Johnson’s is only a 10 minute drive from Eagle Mill and boasts a large Farm Shop and Butcher’s, Tea Room, small Zoo and a Steakhouse.
